Essay about abortion Essay

It is true that abortion may be the death of an innocent being. If that is correct, any woman who has had an abortion should be subject to the consequences of a premeditative first degree murderer, which could possibly be the death penalty. However, the question that truly forms the debate is this: Is the zygote really a human being? Surely there are signs that show life, but is it developed enough to function as a human? I contend that the fetus is not a right-possessing individual, until the point of birth. It cannot claim any rights, while it is still part of the mother. Being part of the mother, it is the mother’s. What happens to her body through the course of her pregnancy is her choice. Therefore, abortion is solely the mother’s choice, and outsiders should not block, or even oppose, her rights as an American. Certainly today’s society needs to clean up it’s act. In most young adults, good morals aren’t commonly used. But they do use their common sense. Young adults are fully aware of what they are getting into, they just aren’t sure of all the consequences. Education plays a big role in this issue. Being taught about birth control and planned parenting statistically helps the number of accidents that can cause abortion. Nevertheless, accidents will happen. Rape will still occur, there will be the rebels, the careless, and the clueless. People make mistakes every day. There should be something to fall back on in a case of an unplanned or unwanted pregnancy. Abortion can be for the well-being of both the mother and the potential child. A woman needs to take full responsibility of her actions. For instance, in a pregnancy, this can come in different forms. It can be when the woman decides to carry to term and be the child’s mother, or when she gives it up for adoption. She can also pay for her own abortion. As a result, the mother will be doing what she truly believes is morally right for the being growing inside of her. Of course the possibility of putting an innocent being to death, is seemingly absurd, and though one may not believe that the being is actually living, there is the possibility. Also, the child the woman is carrying may have the cure for cancer or AIDS. Or it could be the next serial killer. The being might very well deserve a chance at life. On the contrary, there are women  who truly aren’t ready to have a child. This is not only mentally, but physically and emotionally also. I admit that I will never get an abortion, but I strongly believe that it is a necessary option. Also if the child is impaired, has birth defects, Downs Syndrome, or any deadly or life-threatening disease that can be detected before birth, should it live? A woman needs to have the choice of how she wants her potential child’s life to be lived. A woman needs the options to be open. If she does not want to give the baby up for adoption, should she be forced to if she doesn’t have enough money to care for it? So, the mother should be entitled to any decision concerning the being living inside of her, because the chances are that the choice the mother makes will be beneficial. Surely there are people who will get into a pregnancy that have no idea what they are doing. They may get scared and decide to just have an abortion because they aren’t ready to have a child. A woman may feel that this will end all of her hopes and dreams for the future. They may or may not realize that there are other options such as adoption. However, what the woman decides to do, in my opinion, is completely her choice. The being that is growing inside of her body, is hers. Wendy McElroy says, â€Å"Everything beneath the skin is me; this is the line which no one has the right to cross without permission.†Say the world comes to where you can take one pill which would murder the growing being. Could she not have the right to swallow? Can a woman claim the right to her own body when she can’t even control what goes into it? People do not have contracts with their neighbors, friends, and relatives saying that they will not steal from one another or kill each other. Everyone’s body and property is theirs by right. If a fetus is granted individual rights, the contract is superfluous to those rights’ protection. If these rights are not being claimed, there is no possibility for contracts, because a contract is voluntary. So, giving rights to a fetus is useless because of the fact that it will be living inside of the woman, and if she has the right to rid it from her body and wants to do so, the being cannot even fend for itself in the argument at all, and will end up not having it’s way. Admittedly, the number of diseases that are passed genetically has slightly  decreased. Scientists have also been decoding human DNA. This can lead to pin-pointing the exact spot of birth defects and life-threatening diseases and fixing them. On the other hand, we have not yet reached that point in technology. Today testing is available for mothers to see if their potential child has any defects or disease. This greatly influences her decisions on whether to have the baby or not. There are so many factors that can affect the fragile time of pregnancy. There are endless possibilities of things that can be harmful to the growth and development of the baby. If the woman decides to go through with the pregnancy there are things that she can change about herself that can lessen the risk of defects. Such as smoking, drinking, drugs. The problem is that those things can mold the woman into being dependent on. If she chooses to continue to drink while she is pregnant, that is her choice, but she is not the only one who will be affected. If the woman feels that she would not want to have the possibility of her child being defected or doesn’t believe that she could make it with out drinking, she should have the option of abortion. In short, there are many ways that what the pregnant woman does that can change the outcome of her child, and she should be able to make her own decisions concerning the well-being of both herself and the unborn child. Obviously there’s the good side and the bad side to abortion. What seems to be happening today is that people are getting too worked up about something that may never be solved. Both sides of the issue are sketchy, and are very controversial. We may never actually come to a conclusion. On the contrary, we need to look at the laws and see if it is legally possible to ban abortion, or let it freely take place. The question is if the zygote or fetus should be considered a live being or not. Finally, what you believe is your choice. Think a little about what other people may be going through and if a forced pregnancy is even a possibility. Whether you side with me, or are against abortion, always be open-minded.

Tone Interpretation for a Rose for Emily

Teegan Brock Brad Nelson Luke Ziegler Trevor Magerowski Paul Reid English Comp 2 March 18, 2013 Insane Asylum for Emily The short story,† A Rose for Emily† written by William Faulkner has a distinct tone that helps depict the overall theme of how a woman unloved by her father falls into the dark treacherous depths of insanity. In the beginning of the story Emily lived with her father. Her father drove away all of the men in her life so she never found love. Also her father was very overbearing and basically the only person that she ever grew to know personally. Her father cut her extended family off from her so she never was very social. Once her father died she was alone. She had no one except her servants and she was very lonely which probably drove her into partial insanity. She was very used to self-pity because her father was a very big man in the community so once he passed away she never had to pay taxes so she was basically exempt from society. After her father die d she started to see more of people such as her cousins that her father drove away when she was alive. She found love in a guy named homer that went south after she found out about his homosexuality.Faulkner does a good job of using a dark tone and making Emily almost seem unsociable and unlovable to a point where nobody wants to be in her life. Homer basically was the straw that broke the camel’s back and drove her deep into insanity. After Emily finds out about her sexuality she goes to the store to buy poison. The tone in the story makes it near impossible to predict what she was going to do with the poison. The store keeper asked her what she needed it for and she refused to tell him and bought it anyway. She then bought a silver toilet set with her initials engraved on it and a complete outfit including a night shirt. This shows her insanity because she is buying him stuff when he clearly does not love her. This in turn might be the reason for her buying the arsenic becau se he left when the cousins came and she clearly was upset about it. Late in the story Emily’s house started to smell horrid and it was disturbing the community. Because, of her social status and her reputation for being the crazy, grumpy old lady the town refused to take action and disturb her. Thirty years passed the smell continued so the town just sprinkled lime to cover up the smell. After she passed away they went upstairs to her room and discovered homers dead body. This story and the overall tone clearly pleads the case of Emily’s insanity because they found her hair on the indented pillow lying next to homers body. This showed that she slept in the bed with him. She hid that body for 30 years and lived with the smell. The authors tone made it easy to depict the theme that Emily was drove into insanity by her father and never being able to find love and be social with other people. To quote the great W. C. Fields â€Å"No doubt exists that all women are crazy; it's only a question of degree. † And in Emily’s case it’s the highest degree.

Read each article, and answer the questions in your own words Essay - 1

Read each article, and answer the questions in your own words - Essay Example It allowed the people to devour the freedoms offered to the society and live a respectable life. It provided the people with immense opportunities in the businesses, trades, and private employment. It also allowed the person to be recognized with dignity and honor in the society. On the other hand, the racial minority was put in chains with strict limitations to the freedoms: be it freedom of speech or freedom of expression. They were de-humiliated in the society and left with least honor. Their opportunities in the private sector as well as public firms were extremely limited. Therefore, the people chose to indulge in racial passing. 2. Are there any incentives for any racial minorities to â€Å"pass† as white in America today? Yes. Racial discrimination and segregation, though declining each year, is still persistent in the United States. There are people who make policies that are associated with the segregation of the black societies from the main-lands. At the same time, black people still have a hard time finding a decent job in the society. The insurance companies as well as the banks have standard policies that consistently segregate and differentiate between the races. The non-whites get fewer and smaller loans as compared to pure whites. Simultaneously, their insurance cover tends to be pretty low.

ComparisonContrast Montresor and Fortunato Essay

ComparisonContrast Montresor and Fortunato - Essay Example The obsession may derive because the men are equals in background, thus making Fortunato's insults that much more infuriating to Fortunato. Additionally, it seems from their elegant language to each other, they have the same level of education and social circles. Additionally, both men seem to have many of the same interests. While the plot takes advantage of the love of fine wines, it appears that they may have other things in common. Both men are at carnival which indicates a love of parties. Both love wine and pride themselves on their knowledge. Poe says," in the matter of old wines he,' meaning Fortunato.' Was sincere. In this respect I,' meaning Montresor,' did not differ from him materially" (748). Both men seem to have a ludicrous view of self import. Both it seems, may be masons. In the story, Fortunato is certainly a mason, but it is unclear whether Montresor is a mason because while he had the trowel, he did not know the hand gesture. Nevertheless, they both had an interes t in this secret society and felt that it was sign of prestige. Additionally, it can be inferred that both men possessed a dark sense of humor. Perhaps both have had their share of pulling off dark pranks and being the object of dark humor. This premise is evident by the fact that even until the last moment, as the alcohol wore off, Fortunato thought that Montresor may be joking. Finally, both men are arrogant. Fortunato truly believes that he is the one and only expert in fine wines and it is this arrogance that seals his fate. Throughout the journey into the cask, as Fortunato's cough worsens, Montresor taunts him by offering to take him home knowing full well that Fortunato cannot possibly resist the opportunity to taste. Indeed, Montresor depends on Fortunato's arrogance in order to kill him. Montresor, likewise, is arrogant in his perception of the slights suffered by him and served by Fortunato. Even fifty years later, Montresor sits reminiscing about the murder he committed and still justifies it. The main difference between the two men was that Montresor was suspicious and ever alert, but Fortunato was foolish and easily led. Fortunato, as his name implies is favored by fortune. He is admired and adored in society and enjoys popularity. Fortunato has wealth and seems to be well respected by his family. It is perhaps his popularity which allows him to be misled by Montresor. Almost from the beginning of his story, Montresor takes advantage of Fortunato's cockiness and pride. The first manipulation is "As you are engaged, I am on my way to Luchresi. If any one has a critical turn it is he. He will tell me" (748). Montresor diabolically makes this statement because he knows that Fortunato will want to go with him to taste the Amontillado. It works beautifully because Fortunato insists that " Luchresi cannot tell Amontillado from Sherry" (748). Contrary to Fortunato, Montresor does not appear to be loved, respected, or one who enjoys a spot in society. Montresor it seems at one point in time seemed to be an equal of Fortunato but that time has faded. Montresor has a large family it seems and just as many friends but it seems is if that respect dwindled with all of the injuries he suffered. "The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as best I could, but when he ventured insult I vowed revenge" (747). It may be that the injuries delivered

Welfare of Government Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Welfare of Government - Essay Example This paper discusses the ways in which various governments influence the process of innovation and technological developments, and ways in which the government approaches can help achieve sustainable levels of energy use. Innovation and the Government Governments across the globe support technological innovations, including their creation and demonstration, to give confidence and promote the private investors in their countries to adopt these new technologies. Governments will get involved in innovations through initiating technological research, development and demonstration projects in which they offer wide financial support. Further, governments support innovations and technological developments in their nations through subsidizing programs that support these developments (Deutch 2005). The governments have acknowledged that innovation is the process through which they can effectively achieve technical change. The governments are actively involved in the initial step of innovation , which is the creation of technology in their countries. This is often accomplished through supporting the discovery of new technologies and sciences. As earlier mentioned governments together with the help of the private sector and other foundations, sponsor and fund the discovery activities (Deutch 2005). The research and development activities are performed in industries, hospitals, universities as well as laboratories. Governments also help to deploy new discoveries of science and technology in business enterprises or society. Governments encounter challenges in technological changes when deploying new technological innovations because of the uncertain investment decisions involved, the changes involved in the production process with the personnel and customizing these new products or services to meet the needs and the demands of the customers (Deutch 2005). Government Energy Policy Options The governments are greatly concerned with the energy sector and its policies across the globe. The governments’ involvement in energy policies is because energy is a very significant aspect of the economy. The availability, the pricing and the efficiency of energy in all countries affects the performance of the economy. In addition, energy use significantly affects the environment, more specifically the global climate change, which must be addressed by the governments. In certain governments, such as the United States, the reliance on imported oil, and progressively more gas, has essential security implications for the country as well as its partners (Deutch 2005). Most of the global energy policies for various governments are a shift from nuclear dominated power to renewable energy because of their capacity to be environmentally sustainable. Options in energy policy are defined by security of the energy, the reduced costs and alternatives that aim at promoting sustainable environment across the globe. This renewable energy policy options can be achieved by gov ernments reducing their dependence on the nuclear powering their medium and long-term policy plans (Maeda 2012). More important, the governments should enhance the safety of energy in their countries. Moreover, to achieve environmentally sustainable use of energy levels, the governments ought to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels, and reduce the levels of carbon monoxide emissions into the atmosphere (Maeda 2012). Support Options Governments can support the technological innovations through setting the regulations and rules that govern the innovation activities. This will enable the innovations and influence the performance of the process. The support options by the governments include

No child left behind Act Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

No child left behind Act - Essay Example The standardization test scores introduced through the act help teachers recognize learners who do not meet the set goal in time. They are then secluded from the rest and accorded special care. Their progress is then monitored to ascertain the best support for each one of them. Through this initiative the test scores of both the disadvantaged and the typical learners have steadily improved since 2002 (Tavakolian & Howell, 2012). The law has also helped reduce the gap between the minority and the majority white students (Nea, 2014). Through the act, the resources are shared equally. The act has also brought about accountability in both the schools and the teachers. The yearly tests that are conducted by the schools and the results presented to the government (Tavakolian & Howell, 2012). In conclusion, the no child left behind act of 2001 has attained significant success. It has ensured that the American education system is inclusive, and the results are transparent. This clearly demonstrates that the act has been successful for a limited time it has been

Human Rights Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Human Rights - Case Study Example 114) Evaluate this statement using the examples of the law on privacy you have studied in Unit 21. Is the current balance between a right to privacy and a right to freedom of expression appropriate? The subject of human rights has pre-occupied the world for quite a long period now as people seek to pursue their interests with freedom and all inalienable rights guaranteed to them. Human rights are very fundamental in human society and this is evidenced by its adoption in the international law, constitutions of many states, regional institutions law, and policies of private and non-governmental organizations. Most human rights provisions in various legal jurisdictions are informed by the provisions of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (The Open University, 2012, p. 31). Most of human rights laws in many jurisdictions borrow from the Declaration’s provisions. According to the Open University (2012, p. 15), human rights are based on three main premises. The first premise i s that human rights are universal, which mean that they are held equally by all people regardless of aspects such as geography, gender, and age. The second premise is that human rights are inalienable and therefore cannot be taken away from someone by anybody regardless of the circumstances. The final premise is that human rights are indivisible and therefore cannot be denied simply because they are viewed to be non-essential or less important. Clapham (2007, p. 114) states â€Å"human rights simultaneously claim to protect freedom of expression and the rights to privacy.† Over the years, there has been debate regarding the issues that Clapham raises in this assertion. The debate has been revolving around the question of how and to what extent does human rights protect freedom of expression and the rights to privacy. Also, questions have been raised regarding the nature and limitations of such protection and whether there are circumstances in which this protection can be viol ated. Therefore, this essay will evaluate this statement using several examples of the privacy law. Also, it will discuss the question of whether the current balance between a right to privacy and a right to freedom of expression is appropriate. Before evaluating this statement, it is important to define some of the key terms in the statement: human rights; freedom of expression; and right to privacy. Human rights refer to the fundamental rights that are inalienable to an individual by the virtue of being a human being (The Open University, 2012, p. 10). Human rights can exist as legal rights or natural rights. Freedom of expression is a legal and political right that allows one to communicate his or her ideas and opinions through various channels of communication. It is essential in daily interactions of individuals, as well as in enabling the society to work and to actively participate in decision making (p. 92). The right to privacy provides individuals or group of individuals to seclude certain information about themselves or seclude themselves and therefore able to selectively reveal themselves. The right to privacy and the freedom of expression are fundamental human rights provisions that allow individual members of the society to interact with each other and to form groups with others in the society. They both provide the bedrock upon which intimate relationships, family relationships, and friendships are built (p. 92). Since most of these aspects are interrelated, protecting right to privacy would simultaneously protect certain aspects of freedom of expression. Clapham (2007, p. 114) asserts that human rights simultaneously claim protection of freedom of expression and that of the right to privacy. A critical look into the definition of human rights

Branding Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Branding - Essay Example In this context, brand name will become the trademark of the company as it exclusively identifies the brand owner as the commercial origin of products or services associated to the brand. Once a brand become very familiar in a marketplace, it gets brand recognition. When a brand becomes so popular that it enjoys a great deal of positive sentiment in the marketplace, it is said to have achieved brand franchise. This means that the brand is recognized, without the name of the company associated to it. The total value of the brand to the brand owner is termed as brand equity. It reflects the power of the brand's recognition. This concept is brought out in the book 'Brand harmony' by Steve Yastrow in which he states" The strength of a brand impression in the mind of a customer is not a function of how many times the customer has seen an ad for a product, or how powerful the message in that ad is, but by how well all experiences the customer has with the product blend to tell one cumulative, sensible story." Looking back in time to what the term brand just means, in those days, brand was a term used to denote a mark burned on the skin with a hot iron. In today's world what this term has been transformed into is a tool, which is used to create a lasting impression in the minds of consumers and to create an enduring emotional association in the consumer with a particular company or product. The phrase "brand image" gained popularity when sales patterns began to show that feelings and visuals associated with brands were powerful motivators to for consumers to purchase a particular product. So what is to be understood from the use of brands as an effective marketing tool is that people don't just buy products, they associate a product with certain values which they believe and so they buy products whose brands represent things they value and like. These values could be something like money, intelligence and so on. A brand is also seen to gain importance when it is associated with an actual person who has the same type of attributes with which a company is trying to brand a product. Let's take Chunky Soup and Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb as an example. Both of them represent the qualities hearty, strong and reliable and brining them together in this way is a very useful way of sending this message to the public. When such ideas are used to build a brand's image, the brand equity turns into a source of competitive advantage and future earnings according to David Aaker1., who is a national authority on branding A look at the concept of brand extension and multi-brands There is a profusion of products in the market today, and many of them are no different from the rest of the group to which they belong. If you go into a local sandwich shop because you want to have some bottled iced tea, you will be seeing a lot of different brands such as SoBe (hip, lizard cult), Tazo (Zen and the art of tea), or Snapple (down-home, New Jersey attitude). All these brands are selling the same thing, which is sweetened flavored tea. The only way that any one of these products can appeal to you over the other is through their brand appeal, and with this we come back to the point that a brand is a very effective marketing tool. According to David A. Weinstein2, in a consumer economy which is highly competitive

Sun Yatsen's Revolution of 1911 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Sun Yatsen's Revolution of 1911 - Essay Example The post Sino-Japanese War (1894-1896) further made the imperial China relinquish more territories including loss of suzerainty of Korea, Taiwan and Manchuria (Lee and Hock 20). The fulcrum of the revolution was the Wuchang rebellion on October 10, 1911, which mainly pushed for changes through the Qing court. The revolution aimed at transforming changing the authoritarian imperial rule to a constitutional monarchy. Led by Sun Yat-sen, a new leadership came into place with him taking the president’s position. The revolution concluded on February 12, 1912 with the abdication of the â€Å"Last Emperor† Puyi. The three people’s principle was responsible for ensuring equality, national identity and establishment of responsive policies as developed by Sun Yat-sen. China’s nationalism or People’s National Consciousness got ideologically drawn from diverse sources including Chinese American thinking, Marxism, Russian ethnological thought and American progressivism (Lee and Hock 28). Nationalism aimed at transforming China’s prosperity by overthrowing the Manchus and limiting the influence of foreign imperialism. Democracy was to proclaim the people’s rights by establishing a republic governed by a constitutional monarchy and not the imperial system. Undoubtedly, nationalism and people’s rights became his primary principles where people had to own the rights of Referendum, Initiative, Recall, and Election. Subsequently, democracy separated the different roles of the government incorporating five powers of the government of Legislation, Judicial, Execu tive, Examination and Control ((Lee and Hock 30). Socialism or people’s livelihood as a principle came after adoption of democracy and nationalism. It was a principle motivated by the idea to equalize land and regulate capital, which got controlled by a few people during the Qing dynasty. Transformation of China from imperial dynasty to a constitutional republic took three stages. The military rule was

Performance Assessment Test Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Performance Assessment Test - Essay Example Having determined the score of each student, using the rubrics the teacher is then able to evaluate the students’ performances and determine whether they have understood and mastered the basics of the unit. Rubrics are an important part of the assessment since they provide teachers with the criteria to use in evaluating the student's performance. Through rubrics, students are also able to benefit since they know what is expected of them (Lund & Kirk, 2010). They are also able to see how instructions fit with the set goals. Reliability and validity can evaluate from two different points of view. The teacher's content given to the students must be excellent both quantitatively and qualitatively (Riggs, Verdi & Arlin, 2009). This is mainly because, when the features are present, then it can be concluded as being both reliable and valid. Validity is usually evidenced when the students are able to apply the ideas taught by the teacher without difficulty. Students should be able to come up with ideas close to or exactly like those of their teachers after their own private research. Validity can also be demonstrated by the achievement of the set goals. Where there is a very big difference between the students' performance and the previously set goals. Reliability, on the other hand, is mainly evaluated on the basis of the usefulness of the teacher's content in the assessments. When the teacher gives details that are out of context then he or she is deemed to be unreliable. On the other hand, will be judged as invalid.... This will normally depend on the goals set at the beginning of the learning period. The teacher should use the objectives to determine the standards of the assessment. The standards will mainly be based on how challenging the exam is. b) Setting of the test and determination of the date The teacher should then go ahead and set the questions of the assessment depending on the content taught. To avoid leakage or copying of the test or any other such irregularities, it is preferred that the teacher does not inform the students of the test. This also assists in ensuring that the teacher does not obtain inaccurate results. The teacher should also set the date on which to administer the test in advance. This is mainly to avoid any delays or interferences with the normal program. c) Administration of the test Once all arrangements are made, the test is then given to the students on the set date. Generally, study shows that it is better when the test is short and clear with no long instructi ons. Students should be able to finish all the questions within the stipulated time; holding all other factors constant. d) Marking of the scripts and determination of the score Since it is a performance assessment and not a summative one, the score of the test is to be determined immediately after the test. The method mostly used is the exchange of scripts, where the students mark each other’s scripts whilst the teacher gives the answers. Having determined the score of each student, using the rubrics the teacher is then able to evaluate the students’ performances and determine whether they have understood and mastered the basics of the unit. 3) Rubric Rubrics are an important part of the assessment since they provide teachers with the criteria to use in evaluating the

Amos and Hosea Essay Example for Free

Amos and Hosea Essay Amos was a Judean who believed he was commissioned by Yahweh to address his words to Israel, However Hosea was a native Israelite. With these two men was the custom of recording oracles which appear to have begun, for if the words of their prophetic predecessors were preserved in a written form, then they would have long since been lost to us all. Within a few years, prophets sharing similar concerns with Amos and Hosea began to be active in Judah and their words too, were preserved. II Kings 15 and Amos 1-9 Amos stood in judgment of moral and ethical evil but, unlike them, he did not limit himself to single issues or to individual situations, but dealt with the decline of Yahwism and human behavior in all levels of society. Cities he mentions), patterns of cause and effect (3:3 ff.), and Israelite cult practices. His vivid imagery, drawn from nature, suggests an intelligent observer capable of relating his insights and experiences in powerful terminology. Perhaps the very simplicity of his life caused him to be shocked at the extravagances of the rich and the terrible poverty and helplessness of those who were the prey of the powerful. The luxury of summer and winter palaces as opposed to the hovels of the poor, the greedy demand of the very rich contrasted with the cry for justice and equity of the underprivileged drove him to harsh pronouncements against powerful, smug, content men and women, priests and king. The thrust of Amos condemnation is against the division of life into compartments. He argues for unity. What a man does in the market place, in the Court of law or, in his dealings with others cannot be walled off from worship. Yahweh is a God of all people; therefore the dealings of man with man are directly related to the dealings of God with man. His is a cry for the recognition of mans moral responsibility before God. But let justice roll down like waters and righteousness like an Overflowing stream. Amos 5:24 AMOS RELIGIOUS CONCEPTS Amos beliefs concerning Yahweh and divine-human relationships were similar. Yahweh the creator, the God of hosts Amos never speaks of Yahweh as God of Israel), or possessed power over nature and nations. Despite the unrealistic emphasis, Yahwehs particular concern was Israel, the chosen or  elected people, Amos emphasized Yahwehs action in history in bringing the Hebrews to nationhood and greatness, and pointed out that the continuance of power and security rested in Yahweh.

Ans- There are many information systems which means the combination of Information technology and the activities related to the people where technology is used to operate the management which is a much need of the corporation that is mom-and-pop business running in Abu-Dhabi, mainly it is a form of communication which can support human decision making and action of the people where it is suitable for the business as it could not be handled by the two persons which are facing many problems related to the management. Ques- What data should these systems capture? Ans- There are various sector on which the information system which act as a special type of work system as it work like a human to abstract the data like humans use the resources to produce a specific product or services for customers. The main problem which is faced is about the management of the business which cannot be handled by the owners of the company which is best suitable work for the Information system whose activities are dedicated to the processing which includes transmitting, manipulating, displaying, storing, capturing and retrieving that is what required managing the records of the business. There are many problems being faced by the owners which can be reduces through Information system that mainly focus on the information systems discipline and organizational informatics. There should be a permanent solution which should be given by the information system where there should whole procedure mentioned in order to keep the detail records of the shipment arrived. Whole of the system should give the clear report about the things which is to be improved and the process which are to be adopted for the better management. Ques- What decisions could the systems improve? Ans- There are various decision which are getting out of the track as they are not bringing the profit to the business which are the rent which they pay, problem in keeping the detail record, sometimes they face short of sale due to their wrong judgment and many other factors which can be factor in decrement in the sale of the business. The information systems which are used can be helpful in improving the above situation which may reduce the workload from humans as it can keep the records of the sales and the system is considered as the socio-technical system which is a mediator between the actions and technology. Scenario 3- Ques- What business problems are created by not having these data in a single standard format? Ans- As there are many items which are currently running under the different database which is to be obtained under the same corporate-wide view of the critical sales information which can result in giving clear view of the best selling products according to the key customers, sales trends and geographic areas. Ques- How easy would it be to create a database with a single standard format that could store the data from both systems? Identify the problems that would have to be addressed Ans- It is lot easier to work in a database with a single standard format which could store the data of the two systems containing different products. The product should be defined under the different categories which make it easier for the employees to search a particular data under a particular heading instead there are many problems which are then being faced by the employees as there are many data which does not fall under any categories has to be given a separate heading which captures more space, sometimes the system is overloaded with the data which is stored monthly. So these were some of the problems which is addressed. Ques- Should the problems be solved by data specialists or general business managers? So the problem which is technical could be solved by the Data specialist as heshe would be having greater knowledge of the problem instead of the manager who is mostly having the knowledge regarding the management field as they can handle the workforce working in any sector or area. Ques- Who should have the authority to finalize a single company-wide format for this information in the data warehouse? Ans- There are many people who have authority to finalize the single company-wide format but most of the time there is a discussion or meeting which is held to discuss about the advantages and disadvantages about the format and the result which comes out of the discussion is applicable on the working system as it is the outcome of the great minds working together. So mainly the power is with the CEOs of the company but for the sake of safety there is discussion which is necessary to be performed. Scenario 4: Ques- How could information systems help Paris Gallery management implement this new strategy? Ans Information system provides information on past, present and future project and also gives the information about relevant events inside and outside the organization. In this case the information system could help Paris Gallery management by gathering relevant data about the perfumes, cosmetics, bags, watches, jeweler and accessories and covert them into right information by telling the taste of the local people and would also help in supplying the same products which are matched by the taste of color, size etc of the local people where Paris gallery stores are present.. Information systems also gives information that gives indication about the goodà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s and bad of the new proposed ideas and through the information given by these systems Paris Gallery management could sense the advantages of implementing the new strategy. If the information provided by these systems indicates the failure of the new idea then the Parris Gallery management can change or modify their st rategies. IN these ways the information provided by the system could help in implementing strategy in the perfect way. Ques- What pieces of data should these systems collect to help management make merchandising decisions that support this strategy? Ans For helping the management to make merchandising decisions that support this strategy the pieces of data like the taste of the local people, which products are preferred by the local people, characteristic of products like color, size which are more purchased by the people should be collected by these systems. These systems should collect the information about number of stores that are already selling that type of products, which stores are preferred by the local people should be given to support the planning and control function of manager. These all data should be collected by the information systems for supporting this strategy of Parris gallery management. Scenario 5- 1 What factors should be considered? Ans- There are various factors included in the communications which already exists between the employees in the Oasis medical supplies corporation where telephone services, mobile phones and emails are generally used which is not compatible with the advancement in the technology of equipments so there is requirement of advance, fast and cheap communication where there are various factors play an important role which exists mainly in the unified communication which has main application of deploying powerful speech-enabled self service which is very useful for the purpose it is being used in the corporation where there could be emergency in the requirements to supply to the hospitals, clinics and medical offices. There are around 500 people who are employed in the corporation at several locations in UAE who has to remain in contact every single second that cannot be achieved through the cell phones, emails and various kinds of voice services. 2 What are the key decisions that have to be made in determining whether to adopt this technology? Ans- As there is communication between the employees of the companies the problems arrives when there is some sort of problem while using the traditional telephone services, mobile phones, e-mail and instant messaging instead of which there is another approach to the communication which is known as unified communication. The unified communication has more benefits as compared to the mentioned above communication as it is used in maximizing the existing infrastructure which can help in avoiding investing in the infrastructure sector, there is a stream line end-user communication which helps in adopting the latest versions of communications. The most important benefit is increase in efficiency and reduction in cost which is majorly considered while there is so much communication required in the firm. (Benefits, 2008)

History Of Sports Journalism Media Essay

History Of Sports Journalism Media Essay Sports journalism  is a form of  journalism  that reports on  sports  topics and  events. While the sports department within some  newspapers  has been mockingly called the  toy department, because sports  journalists  do not concern themselves with the serious topics covered by the news desk, sports coverage has grown in importance as sport has grown in wealth, power and influence. Sports journalism is an essential element of any  news media  organization. Sports journalism includes organizations devoted entirely to sports  reporting  Ã‚  newspapers  such as  LEquipe  in  France,  La Gazzetta dello Sport  in  Italy,  Marca  in  Spain, and the defunct  Sporting Life  in Britain, American  magazines  such as  Sports Illustrated  and the Sporting News, all-sports  talk radio  stations, and  television  networks such as  Eurosport,  ESPN  and  The Sports Network (TSN). History Of Sports Journalism Known as the Golden Age of Sports, the decade or so between the end of World War I and the beginning of  the great depression  was described as a decade of change. America and the world wanted to put the memory of the Great War behind them and enjoy life. The economy was booming because of the war and the automobile was becoming a more common means of transportation. This freedom allowed America to fall in love with sports through the exploits of Jack Dempsey, Man O War, The Four Horseman of Notre, and the biggest name of all,  Babe Ruth. Sports journalisms roots developed long before Sports Illustrated and ESPN. Sports writers, although mocked in early days for not being serious writers, now revel in an industry worth billions. From the Internet, newspapers, radio and television to the movies and magazines, content is vast and packed with heart racing photos and videos of games, plays, moments, and victories and losses. Athletes jockey for a place in the news and the cameras always seem to be rolling, and now for the history of sports journalism. 1789IN THE BEGINNING Horses, which some paleontologists believe may have originally evolved from dinosaurs, may have the right to claim the first glimmers of sports journalism. In 1727, The Racing Calendar offers information about races and their results. In 1791, The General Stud book is added. The site History World, www.historyworld.net explains that the English were curious about the lineage of their horses too. Boxing is a popular sport in London. Champion Daniel Mendoza writes a book about the sport. It is called The Art of Boxing. Mendoza goes on to lose the title from John Jackson, known as Gentleman Jack. According to the site, his name is more for the circle of friends than his fighting style. From these times, the publications for men told of great battles between men and if they fought for fun, exercise or settling a wager. Even back then, the details involving blood, bruises and broken bones excited men. The sport gained in popularity after readers caught on to the idea of beating someone without getting in trouble. Women were not allowed in any sports establishment in London, and most had no desire to change this rule. In the 1800s, the idea of basketball is started and other sports follow. The times of America demanded attention to be placed on work and home, not recreational activities. In the early part of the 1900s, America dealt with the full impact of the  Industrial Revolution  and World War l. The times preceding the First World War brought a new life to the game of golf, which has its early origins in Scotland. The Scots claim they invented the game; however, there is some speculation that they may have evolved it instead. 1900sEarly Days Golf is a popular game and has several magazines devoted to it. This includes The American Golfer. Published by Conde Nast, it was founded in the early half of the 1900s. Its covers have featured golf greats, including Bobby Jones, Walter Hagen and Byron Nelson. The Depression and World War ll brought a halt to sports as scores of men and women left home to defend the country. Children and youth continued to play. Yet, it was after the war that sports celebrated a rebirth. 1954 THE BIRTH OF SPORTS ILLUSTRATED Sports Illustrated is arguably one of the most popular magazines for sports journalism. Even though its first issue was not released until August of 1954, the executives at Time, Inc realized its potential when World War ll ended and sports became a major recreational activity. The first cover features slugger Eddie Matthews of the Milwaukee Braves. Back then, executives did not know much about sports journalism. The magazine changed from one week to the next as they tried different ideas. Still, the topics offered readers a full range of information and photographs regarding different sports. These included everything from football and basketball to gymnastics and even bullfighting! The earlier issues featured how-to tips too. Once the readership became established, executives enticed fans with a three-page centre foldout of 1954 Topps baseball cards. Willie Mays, Jackie Robinson and Ted Williams were featured on the cards, which were printed on the same paper stock as the magazine. The term, Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue dates back to the early 1960s when executives began pondering the idea. In January 1964, the first issue showing a woman with a white two-piece suit caused an instant reaction. The picture is tame by todays standards. In the early days of the magazine African Americans did not have equality or respect. Through time, and many long fights, this is changing. Sports Illustrated is one place to feature the black athletes. These include two popular personalities, Muhammad Ali and Michael Jordan. It was claims that They have been featured on the front cover more times than any other athletes. The front cover of SI, as it is called by many readers and fans, featured non-athlete faces, including Bob Hope, Ernest Hemingway and President John F. Kennedy. These issues, if they can be found and in top condition, have enormous value. SPORTS JOURNALISM NOW Today, Sports Illustrated is branching out with an issue for youth. Its content is designed to encourage involvement in sports, provide information about reducing injuries, and highlighting major names like Michael Johnson and others. The editors know the youth are influenced by what they include in each issue. In response, they often include ads by stars that encourage youth to avoid drugs and alcohol, stay in school and remain clear of trouble. It is one of the few magazines geared towards youth. Newspapers provided sports journalism from the first days of publishing. The coverage was basic and sparse. Writers often did not know much about the sports themselves. Occasionally, a sportswriter would actually have a working knowledge of the game. Times changed when accuracy and details became more important than yellow journalism. This was when the focus was on the sensational bits of news and facts often went unverified, if they were facts at all. As credible papers debuted, sportswriters needed more knowledge of the sport they covered. Now, many companies and stations want actual experience form their writers. This makes former athletes more valuable and offers them a chance to stay in the game instead of disappearing from sight. The Internet, radio shows and television offer sports journalism. The depth of coverage is intense and high point players garner attention and fame. The stories by sportswriters cover more than scores and highlights; they also cover future plays, fears of coaches, personal snapshots of players, typical road life adventures, issues with recruiting and trades. It is not just the fans who pay attention to the sportswriters. Coaches from around the country, scouts and even advertisers watch and listen. Nike, Spalding and other big names use the information provided by the sportswriters when looking for the next big idea. They want to see who will be the next star. The whole wants to know too, and sportswriters have plenty of answers. A Sports Journalists A sports writer has the responsibility to both entertain and inform people about what is occurring within the world of sports. Some sports writers focus on one particular sport whereas others write on all sports within a given area. Some sports writers are syndicated or are published in more than one newspaper and others may write for a local newspaper or even for a website, blog, magazine or TV show. Sports writers may work freelance and sell individual stories to various news outlets or they may work for a given publication. Those sports writers that do freelance work pick their sporting events to cover, whereas those that work for a publication are usually assigned stories. Both types of sports writers have to be able to capture the excitement and interest of the reader as well as provide an accurate depiction of the sporting event or issue that they are writing on. A sports writer must be willing to work long hours and still make deadlines for printing. Most writers now use computer word processing programs that make editing and revising a bit easier, and also allows for submissions by email to meet tight deadlines. Creativity, a very complete understanding of the sport, good rapport with athletes, coaches and managers as well as an ability to write are all important for a sports writer. An interest in news as well as keeping up-to-date on all issues with regards to the sports community is also important on a daily basis. Common work activities include: Attending games and sporting events to be able to write accurately and effectively on the events of the game. Writing insightful, informative and original stories on various aspects of sports from human interest on up to game day results. Researching, networking and developing contacts in the sporting world that can provide accurate and up-to-date information on various aspects of the sport. Meeting with publishers, editors and writing teams to develop and obtain assignments or ideas for possible stories. Keeping in constant contact with athletes, owners, coaches and managers and using high ethical standards to avoid compromising the writing. As the name suggests,  Sports Journalism  reports on sports topics and events and it is an essential element of any news media organization. Today career in sports is at its boom and which also brings wonderful career opportunities for sports journalists as well. Television, radio, magazines, internet have become an integral part of peoples life. Many of them are ardent fans of different sports; they switch to TV, websites, newspaper for getting latest updates and news in their sports. Thus, the scope of  sports journalism  is increasing gradually.  Sports Journalism  prepares students to sports reporting career and also introduces them with the writing of a sports writer and media professionals use. But still a lot to done in this field, it is disappointing to say that there are not enough good sports magazines in Indian languages. A couple of English sports magazines are available in the market which cater with the need of limited sports fans but many sports loving people who are not comfortable in English do not enjoy this privilege. Today it is a rewarding vocation which requires talented and skilled sports media professionals. To be a sport journalist you need to know inside out of your subject and have a passion to make a mark in this vocation. It also demands lot of hard work and onus. However, rewards are lucrative, a sport journalist gets box seats at the games, meets internationals sports star, gets lot of exposure while travelling from one country to another, getting to know the people who train Olympics athletes and fame appreciations from the readers and fans. Today, internet has become an important part of  sports journalism. Almost all journalists have to start from ground zero.   So if you are an aspiring Journalist, you can start with your own blogs on your favourite team or particular sport. This helps you to build up your portfolio of self-published clips and if any sports organization finds your blog interesting then you could also get a chance to work with them. Today Sports Journalism has turned into long form writing, it also produces popular books on sports which include biographies, history and investigations. Many western countries have their own national association of sports journalists.   In India there has been recent growth in Sports Journalism. The sports column in various leading newspapers is widely popular among readers. Indians today not just appreciate cricket but they have also understood the importance of other sports also like football, hockey, wrestling, boxing etc. You could go for a degree in sports journalism which could enhance your writing and reporting skills and also trains you efficiently in the areas sports. You would learn to write technical details about a sport in a simple manner. One could also opt for journalism and match reporting course which deals with going to sport games, sporting events, and venues, meeting with players then reporting all this to sports crazy audience. The career opportunities in sports journalism are match reporter, freelance sports journalist and sports writer. You would get to work in newspaper, radio, TV, magazines and online journalism. As the conclusion, sport is one of the well-published issues in the Net. Sport issues gain a lot of publicity and discussions in the media. The examples are numerous: thousands of football news article depict the reactions of trainers to a particular event. Important soccer games are an everyday issue in TV channels. New technologies are used everywhere in coverage of sports: tennis streaming video presents the particular strokes of favoured tennis stars, such as Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova. At the days of serious matches, fans enjoy watching the game of their favoured teams in tennis or football online. We might ask ourselves: what is the role the Media plays in Sport? One probable answer would be that the media successfully exploits the public need for entertainment. People have always felt the need to be entertained, starting from the days of gladiators, when the public general demand was to see people die in front of them in exchange for their money. As the years went by, the forms of the entertainment changed and became less cruel, but the principle of the crowd asking for Panem et circenses (i.e. bread and circuses) remained the same. In this matter, sports news is the best possible entertainment, and watching sport online or on TV is the best possible way to witness the actual thing happening. And here comes the next possible answer: media adheres to the needs of the wide public, fulfilling the desire to watch the actual thing on-line. Although a football match might occur in Milano, and tennis game may take place in Moscow, media brings the tennis game and the football match straight to your living room, without the need to get up from sofa and buy the ticket to Milano or wherever you want to get to. Media makes use of our need to witness the actual thing by serving as a mediator between the sporting event, which happens somewhere out there, and us, the viewers. Being a central part of our everyday experience, media brings sports coverage to our living room and shows it to us whenever we choose. Id say its a good thing, but you choose for yourselves.

A Mans versus a Womans Mind in Ernest Hemingways Up in Michigan :: essays research papers

The difference between a man’s and a woman’s mind, in Ernest Hemingway’s Up in Michigan Many of the narrative strategies Hemingway applied to his war stories in In Our Time he had already practiced or applied in earlier stories not concerned specifically with the war. One such is "Up In Michigan", which Hemingway had originally intended as the first story of In Our Time, but had to exclude because of its controversial presentation of sexual relationships. From his mother to his sisters to his four wives, Hemingway could not help being influenced by the strong, cultured women who surrounded him all his life. We notice, right from the beginning of his life, that Ernest Hemingway was confronted to two opposite ways of thinking, the Manly way, and the Woman way. This will be an important point in his writing and in his personal life, he will show a great interest in this opposition of thinking. In this short story, Hemingway uses simple words, which turn out to become a complex analysis of the male and female minds. With this style of writing, he will show us how different the two sexes’ minds work, by confronting them to each other in a way that we can easily capture their different ways of working. The scene in which the characters are set in is simple, and by the use of the simplicity of the words and of the setting, he is able to put us in-front of this dilemma, he will put us in front of a situation, and we will see it in both sexes point of view, which will lead us to the fundamental question, why are our minds so different? Hemingway can be seen as a women's man, he was attracted to women, and marriage did not prevent him from having affairs. Whatever his life was, one of the main themes in his writing remained his determination to understand the difference between the two genders. This difference always mattered in his texts, as we will see in this short story, written by Hemingway, â€Å"Up In Michigan†. In this story, Hemingway tries to tell the story in the way he thinks a woman would see and live it, during the story, he will alternate the two point of views, the man’s (Jim), and the woman’s (Liz), and he will end the story on Liz’s view.

King Leopold II and Belgian Imperialism Essay -- European History Essa

King Leopold II and Belgian Imperialism In 1865, King Leopold II succeeded his father to the thrown of Belgium and thus began one of the most brutal and insensitive periods of imperialism ever to exist. From manipulative treaties to straight forward intimidation, Leopold dominated his empire like no other. He was cruel, deceptive, and downright evil, yet it took the world over twenty years to recognize this. The record of King Leopold’s atrocity is an interesting account of how a jealous man could inflict some of the most disgusting forms of oppression upon his fellow members of the human race. When Leopold came to power in 1865, he was incredibly disappointed at Belgium’s lack of power in the imperial world. Every other western European nation by had this time had taken on colonies as part of their empire; and therefore had been acquiring incredible wealth due to their new markets and exploitation of the native peoples they encountered. Belgium, itself, was a small country, and unlike their neighboring nations, they had not yet entered into the colonial scene. This all changed when the famous explorer Henry M. Stanley accepted Leopold’s proposal to return to the Congo acting as an agent of the crown whose mission was to obtain the signatures of all the native chieftains living in the Congo. Using despicable and manipulative tactics, Stanley was able to acquire over 450 treaties which paved the way for the declaration of nearly one million square miles of the Congo River Basin as the property of King Leopold II. The land Leopold had obtained was about eighty times larger than that of Belgium itself. The Partridge Family :: essays research papers

If you were alive 30 years ago you probably can recall those Friday nights when you were sitting in front of the television set during prime time watching a widowed mother and her five children who charmed America and broke a generation gap with their groovy, bubble gum sounding tunes. You probably would also know that "The Partridge Family," with its something for everyone cast and groovy tunes, took over America as an instant success in the fall of 1970.The Partridge Family was the 70s successor to the Monkees who were a mid 60s hit. Both the Monkees and the Partridge Family were fictional rock/pop bands produced by a television branch of Columbia Pictures called Screen Gems, but unlike the Monkees, the Partridge Family strictly was about wholesome and traditional family values. (UBL.com)The famous cast included screen and stage veteran Shirley Jones who played the mother, Shirley Partridge. Shirley Jones had been in numerous plays and movies including Rodgers and Hammerstien’s "Oklahoma!", "The Music Man", "The Big Slide", and the 1960 film version of Elmer Gantry which won her an Academy Award for her role as a prostitute. In 1956, Shirley Jones married actor Jack Cassidy who was the father of her future co-star David Cassidy. Born April 12, 1950 in New York City, David Cassidy grew up in the show business atmosphere with both his father and mother being avid performers. After he graduated from Rexford, a private school in Beverly Hills, he worked with the Los Angeles Theater Group and was featured in the Los Angeles theater production of "And so to Bed" (members.tripod.com). After that he moved to New York and back to Los Angeles while starring in several plays and TV shows including "Mod Squad" and "Bonanza", but David Cassidy didn’t get his big break until he returned to his first love, music, when he was cast as Keith Partridge. Other cast members who played Partridge siblings included Susan Dey, a popular New York fashion model who played Laurie Partridge, and the red headed and freckled Danny Bonaduce who played Danny Partridge and to many people’s surprise actually came from an 100 percent Italian background (The Partridge Family Deluxe Souvenir Album). The youngest partridges as you may know were Chris and Tracy. Chris was first played by Jeremy Gelbwaks during the first season, but his parents soon became uncomfortable about his acting with the mania that surrounded the show and took their son out of the cast.

Chapter I Background a) GLOBALAccording to the latest research from Japan, prolonged periods playing with game consoles can lead to decreased brain activity and cause users to suffer form severe emotional and behavioral problems. The study, conducted at Tokyo’s Nihon University, has revealed that people who spend long periods playing video games demonstrate less activity in the prefrontal region of their brain which governs emotion and creativity that their peers. Researchers claim that side effects can include loss of concentrations, an inability to control temper and problems socializing or associating with others. Some of the physical effects of online games are â€Å"Social isolation†, players often play alone and the games have little real-world application. They may spend less time in other activities such as sports, reading, interacting with family, or doing homework. Increased aggressive behavior, despite the limitation of the studies, most experts agree on the basic link between games and increased aggression. Desensitization to gender issues, women are often portrayed as weak, ineffective, or having exaggerated chests.Rewarding violent behavior, in violent online games, the winners are usually the ones who have more violent options at their command, and use them. † Some students are more prone to flashes of light when they occur at certain frequencies† says Walsh, a scientist. Recent data from UCLA’s Higher Education Research Institute provides useful information about online game usage on high school campuses. The data show that most high school students have played video games, many played online games, many play them regularly, and a small percentage use them as a primary means of entertainment and leisure. In the 2009 Freshmen Survey, around 1% of respondents admitted to playing over 20 hours of online games per week. Over 35% of the respondents stated that they play at least one hour per week. The trend toward increased online game and other interactive digital media usage does not appear to be going away. The upcoming high school students are even more likely to be tightly tried to their technology than students are today. The current generation is exceedingly comfortable with technology and electronic entertainment. One study noted that the average American youngster now spend one-third of each day with some form of electronic media. (Escobar-Chaves and Anderson, 2008) Some studies have yielded no significant online game effects, just as some smoking studies failed to find a significant link to lung cancer. But when one combines all relevant empirical studies using meta-analytic techniques, five separate effects emerge with considerable consistency. Violent online games are significantly associated with: increased aggressive behavior, thoughts and affect: increased physiological arousal; and decreased prosocial behavior. Anders on, 2003, Myths and Facts, para. 1) In another study which considers available research on media violence, several relevant conclusions were reached (Anderson, et al. , 2003). It was found that there are â€Å"sufficient studies with sufficient consistency† to back up several important finding (Anderson, et al. , 2003, p. 93). Online games violence is linked to aggression in the short term. Cross-sectional studies have been able to how a correlation between long term exposures to online games violence and real world violence.A few longitudinal studies are also able to suggest that online game exposure has long term effects on aggression. It should be noted that Craig Anderson, on of the author of this study has been criticized for overstating the data on online games and its link to aggression and violent behavior. (Block and Crain, 2007) b) NATIONAL Online game it has an effect t on the students here in the Philippines as well as their lifestyle, job, health and school perfo rmance. One of the online games here in Philippines that students are really addicted with it, is World of Warcraft also known as DOTA.Playing this game also triggers the player to lose his/her temper and values, it is because of the different languages used during the game or what we called â€Å"trash talks†. Trash talks such as foul languages can really lose their temper and values. As a result, the both sides will fight against each other. Online game is an outlet for the player to be who they really are inside unlike in the real world; we are expected to act a certain way or do thing a certain way. In online game, a player can be anything and everything they’ve ever imagine or believed. This can be extremely harmful because players have said they forget about what’s going on around them or dealing with real life situation or problems. When gamer starts to play the online game more often and longer, it can have some lasting effects on their life. Students hav e reported relationships failures to their parents and low school performance due to their online game addiction. Some of them have become addicted, they’ve actually lost their concentration in their studies and resulting into school life failures and worst of all they always have final grades which are so badly and cause for them to retain.Long term online game addiction can have lasting bad effects on the gamer’s health. Gamers become depressed because the virtual world and genuine line between real world and virtual world. They tend not to ask out for help because their ashamed. They are hesitating that the game has so ashamed their life is out of their control due to an online games. Aside from addiction, gambling is also one of the results of online games to the students here in the Philippines. The country’s President Ninoy Aquino said that â€Å"Online games is another source of gambling here in our country†.Aquino sited a particular place where ga mbling in online games is rampant. â€Å"Parents should watch out for their children because most common participants in internet gambling are student form High Secondary have and College even Elementary pupils (â€Å"Television†, 2012) It can very difficult for someone, who had not playing an online game, to understand how someone becomes addicted. Addicted gamers change their way of thinking about reality. Everything in the real world starts to look fake but the game becomes reality. Addicted gamers sometimes lose everything and have to begin their lives over in a sense. They have to start getting back the basics and work back into life. For some with help that thinking can go back to normal. While others need a lot more help. There is online gamers anonymous which is a 12 step self help group. They have a 24 hours meeting place online in a forum setup. In some communities, there’s place a gamer can go to work through and addiction. As in any situation where new tech nology is introduced, the social impact of the Internet is being looked at. One social problem that has been observed is that the Internet cafe has become mainly game centers.About one-half to two-thirds of the computers in a typical Internet cafe, according to one study, are devoted to games (violent and gory games). The use of the remaining computers was roughly split between browsing, email, online chat, word processing and research. The Internet cafes have become not just game centers. They are becoming centers off addiction among the youth, mostly boys, including elementary school pupils. According to one concerned Internet cafe entrepreneur, â€Å"Internet cafes are seducing youths to a new form of addiction, one which may not destroy their bodies as drugs do, but which is certainly twisting their minds. To the young play is reality and reality is play. † (Maslog C. , 1998) Chapter II REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE Computer had its own origin in the late 1940s. Originally, computers were considered as machines meant exclusively for doing calculations. The name computer was derived from the word Compute based on the fact that the machine was meant for doing computation. I course of time, computers were being used for a number of wide and varied applications ranging from playing games, downloading application and documents, communicating with remote methods of using computers also took a new direction during the past years.Initially computers were used as single standalone machines kept isolated from other computers. Gradually, computers were interconnected to from computer networks. This networking provides several advantages. Networking allows sharing data as well as resources between the networked computers. Soon the number of networks began to grow. More and more networks were formed in different areas. Later, the various small computer networks located in different places were interconnected to form large networks. Finally, a large network several computer networks, spreading across the world, was formed. This network came to be known as the Internet. Thus, the Internet is a worldwide, publicly accessible interconnected computer network that transmits data based on the standard protocols. Due to the large availability of information, the Internet is sometimes referred to as a Information Superhighway. The Internet influences our day-to-day lives indifferent ways. We will see and experience this technology benefits us in different activities. Perhaps this is the only technology that has affected the people irrespective of their location, language or profession. In the modern age, computers have become a part of man’s life. Almost all the things around us were made by computers with the aid of modern machines. Form the edited books, design, special effects in the movies and televisions etc. , were all made by computers. In the past few decades, interactive electronic media has grown form virtual non-existence t one of the primary means of entertainment for the learners. In more recent years, the Internet has completely changed the landscape of electronic media from something individual and static into something with potential to be interactive and social. This research examines the effects of increased student usage of traditional video games as well as online games. The demographics of the typical game player will be examined along with effects on the individual development and sociological perceptions. This research will also look at the potential education utility of online games and the effect of games on student engagement and social development. References (Maslog C. Folate Supplementation In Food Essay

Generally, fortification of foods have proven beneficial to people over the past years as it restores the nutrients that may have been lost in food processing and also enhances the vitamins that the food contain. Examples of food fortification include the addition of Vitamin C, to an orange drink, Vitamin D to dairy products, and Vitamins B1 and B2 to bread, among many others. However, while food fortification is generally considered beneficial to consumers, a recent article, Folic Acid Fortification: One Size May Not Fit It All, which was published in Natural News. com, showed that foods fortified with folic acid increase the risk of colon cancer. While I am in generally in favor of the fortification of foods, the article made me think twice before consuming foods that are high in folic acid. Although the article showed that folic acid had a number of benefits, particularly the 20 per cent reduction of birth defects of the spinal cord and the central nervous system, it still had health risks which, for me, should be greatly considered before taking in foods that are high in folic acid. In addition, even though the number of benefits outweigh the risks when consuming food that are fortified with folic acid, I believe that food manufacturers, nutritionists and members of the health sector should further conduct a collaborative and in-depth study on folic acid-fortified foods before they are made available for public consumption. The findings of the study should be then showed to the public so that people are aware of the risks of eating too much of a certain food. Another option which I believe would greatly avoid the risks of consuming food fortified with folic acid is the modification of food labeling. At present, food labeling is mandatory. However, it only shows the amount of nutrients, carbohydrates, calories, cholesterol, and other contents of the food and not the risks associated with it. In this regard, I would recommend that food manufacturers label fortified foods which contain substances that have known health risks in such a way that the people or consumers can see what exactly the risks are. For example, if a food is high in folic acid, which were shown to increase the risks of colon cancer, its label should clearly indicate that too much consumption of this food can lead to the colon cancer or should at least contain a warning. Furthermore, I also believe one way to lessen the risks of consuming foods fortified with folic acid, is for the government to make the public more aware of the exact content of the food and the dangers associated with them. Nevertheless, the article stated that only those who consume too much food fortified with folic acid are at risk for colon cancer, which means that these kinds of food are relatively safe if consumed moderately. The bottom line is people should always be aware of the exact content of the food they are eating in order to avoid possible health risks.

Financial Issues for Financing SMEs in Pakistan Essay

The small and medium sector enterprises are considered an impetus to economic growth in any country since these enterprises are mostly labour intensive and they tend to boost the employment more than any other sector. The government of Pakistan has identified the SME sector as one of the leading sectors along with agriculture and construction that can generate employment and contribute to overall economic growth. This sector in Pakistan contributes over 30 percent of the gross domestic product, 25 percent in export earnings, and 35 percent in manufacturing value addition. As per industry reports there are approximately 3. 2 million economic establishments across the country of which the SME sector contributes to 90 percent of all private enterprises employing almost 78 percent of the non-agricultural labour force. The sustained growth of this sector in Pakistan is restrained by a number of factors that include shortage of skills, inadequate leadership and management qualities, scarcity of capital goods, lack of structured data on the sector, resistance to change and difficulties in marketing products. But the biggest challenge facing the SME sector in Pakistan is the lack of adequate financing facilities. The limited access to credit has impaired the growth of this sector considerably. The banks are averse to taking risks in extending finance to the small and medium enterprises. The larger corporations face no such difficulty since the financing institutions have minimized risk due to their larger scales of operation and higher credibility in the market. The SME sectors are unable to provide adequate collateral in addition to the lack of adequate technical and managerial know-how that may affect the profitability of the business venture. For the purpose of this study the researcher has identified three prominent areas that influence the credit lending policy of financing institutions to the SME sector in Pakistan. These are political, legal and economic challenges facing the financial institutions. Statement of Objectives The Pakistan economy comprises mainly of the SMEs as suggested by the recent statistics outlined in the previous section. However, the sector suffers from a number of weaknesses that have constrained its development to its full potential. The SME sector does not have adequate access to finance from the formal sectors like large private banking corporations and financial institutions. They have to rely mainly on the credit facilities from the informal sector. The research paper intends to analyse the SME sector in Pakistan with emphasis on its growth over the past few years, the impact of this sector on the overall economic development, and the policy adopted by the government of Pakistan towards the sustainable growth of this sector. It will highlight the role of major financing institutions like International Finance Corporation, Asian Development Bank, and the State Bank of Pakistan to boost the SME sector in the country. The paper will aim to provide answers to discussion objectives raised by study of the financial strategies of the funding institutions – the challenges and risk implications of financing small and medium enterprises. The objectives identified are summarised below: †¢ What are the factors that contribute to the overall financing of businesses in Pakistan? †¢ How does the political and legal environment affect the credit lending policy of the financial institutions in Pakistan? †¢ What strategies and policies are being adopted by the government of Pakistan to combat these issues? The paper proposes to analyse the economic, legal and political environment factors that simulates the lending policy of the financing institutions in Pakistan. The study identifies the lack of proper regulatory environment that restricts the banks’ operations in terms of providing finance to the borrower. The high rate of failures of business enterprises due to slumps in the market; institutional malpractices, political upheavals and damaging acts by the labour unions have presented huge risks for the credit lending institutions. In addition to insufficient and low quality production to meet demands of local and international markets, deficit in balance of payments, and increasing unemployment have increased the risk potential for the SME sector. Research Methodology The research paper will comprehensively review the SME sector in Pakistan highlighting the market statistics, trends and policies affecting the credit availability. The study will focus on the major points tabulated below: †¢ Research on the background of SMEs in Pakistan †¢ Identify the various sources of finance available for the small and medium enterprises †¢ Analyse the political, economic and legal environment factors that influence the industry segment. †¢ Research the implications of these factors on the credit lending policy of the financial institutions. †¢ Analyse the steps taken by the government in the past few years towards meeting these challenges. †¢ Analyse the roles of the financial and regulatory bodies in the growth and development of the SME sector. †¢ Provide recommendations to the SME policy within the scope of the study objectives. The paper will also discuss the SME policy that is being followed by the Government of Pakistan through its regulating body the Small and Medium Enterprise Development Authority (SMEDA). The SME policy adopted in the past laid over-emphasis on the industrial and manufacturing activities with little focus on the service sectors. The schemes designed for small enterprise development lacked focus and did not address the core issues of enterprise development and employment growth. Political manipulation and interference led to accrual of bad loans for banks and loss of public funds. Overall they contributed little to economic growth and did very little for the employment issues. These were some of the past initiatives that led to a cautious approach by the banks and financial institutions while lending credit to the small and medium enterprises in Pakistan. Recent years have seen a significant swing in the policy of the Pakistan government towards the development and growth of this sector. The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority was established to boost the development of SMEs and monitor their interests with an eye to encourage and facilitate the growth of such enterprises. The paper will analyse the role of SMEDA in the past few years, the initiatives taken and the policy changes that made an impact on the SME sector. The research will evaluate the steps taken by this regulatory body to counter the challenges posed by the political, economic and legal environment to the financing of the SME sector. â€Å"The most significant step taken by the Government of Pakistan for the development of SMEs was the establishment of the Small and Medium Enterprise Bank (SME bank) to arrange for speedy financial assistance. † (Kaiser H. Naseem, the president of SME bank in an interview to PAGE). In addition to the setting up of the SME bank, Pakistan witnessed impressive changes in the SME financing sector. Global institutions like International Finance Corporation (IFC) are playing a major role in aiding the SME sector in Pakistan. It is observed by these institutions that the country needs to provide a conducive and enabling environment for SMEs to operate. They require support and assistance in order to achieve their maximum potential. Organisations like SMEDA can play a critical role in business development process, advisory support, and managerial training of SMEs. The commercial banks and financing institutions need to develop dedicated segment for servicing the SMEs. The banking institutions based on Islamic principles are providing interest free financial assistance to this sector. Based on such facts the research will outline the policies and recommendations that will help in structuring the financing of the small and medium enterprises. The research will be based on various journals, Internet articles, and textbooks related to the Small and Medium Enterprise sector in Pakistan. Explanation of Research Design The research will be based on two principal source types – qualitative and quantitative research. Data collection method: Qualitative research comprising of interviews and data gathered from other sources. The research employs data gathered from the SMEs in Pakistan taken from online resources and printed materials in the form of journals, newspaper articles and textbooks. Quantitative research that constitutes of statistical data collected from financial institutions. The study will be based on the statistical data of finance to SME sector in Pakistan collected for the past five years. This data will assist in analysing the financing trends in the recent years and help in projecting growth trends in the sector. Data processing and analysis: The outcome of the research conducted on the subject matter from various sources mentioned above will be written as a descriptive conclusion of the study conducted. The processed statistical data will be presented as graphs and pie charts for better understanding. Validity, reliability and limitations: As the information collected from various journals, newspaper reports and articles reflect the current market trend; the analysis based on the findings will be accurate and reliable. Timetable of research activities: Appendices The study will make use of facts and figures available from the published reports of State Bank of Pakistan, World Bank, Asian Development Bank, International Finance Corporation, SME Bank of Pakistan, SMEDA and other journals released by the government of Pakistan on the subject matter.
